Yes, it is that time of year again when you can sign up for a Holcomb Farm Winter CSA share.   These shares feature a diverse array of produce grown here at Holcomb Farm, and the best part is you get to eat our delicious New England vegetables all year! Because of the cold, New England is the best place to eat winter vegetables, as crops in this area will prepare themselves for winter by getting sweeter!  However, these crops are very limited, as we must grow most of them in the fall, and distribute them in the winter.  For this reason, we offer only a limited number of Winter Shares.  We offer only 85 shares for the Winter CSA, and we have over 450 Summer CSA members that have first ‘dibs’ on them.  So, if you are interested in our Winter CSA, do not wait long to sign up!

We have, once again, a lot of good looking crops in the field right now that will be distributed in our Winter CSA.  These crops will either be stored in our ‘root cellar’, stored in our dry room, grown in our greenhouses throughout the winter, or picked directly from the field in the middle of winter itself!

Description:

The Winter CSA is a winter full of storage produce and some fresh greens.  Distributions start in the beginning of November and will go through mid-February.  Pick-ups will be monthly; two of these pick-ups will be scheduled before major winter holidays, so you will be able to use local produce in the middle of winter to prepare your holiday meals!  At each distribution you will receive a much larger quantity of produce than you receive in your weekly Summer CSA Share.  You can store some of this produce in your refrigerator, some in your basement, or and some in the ‘dry room’ of your house for a number of weeks if you do not wish to eat it all immediately.  This way you should have produce to last you in between distributions.

Pricing:

$375 per Winter Share – This includes five pick-ups scheduled throughout the winter, giving you roughly 140 lbs of winter storage crops, and fresh salad greens from the greenhouse.

What’s in the Share?

We cannot guarantee that specific crops will be available at a certain pick-up.  Produce availability varies with the time of year as in the Summer Share.  The share will mostly consist of storage roots.  Availability of greens is seasonal.  The items you may expect to receive as a part of your winter share include:

Arugula, Spinach, Lettuce Mix and more from our greenhouses, Potatoes, Onions, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Winter Squash, Beets, Turnips, Parsnips, Collard Greens, Broccoli, Radicchio,  Radishes, Celeriac, Dried Hot Peppers, our own Canned Tomatoes, Cabbage, Kohlrabi and more!

Winter Crop Seasonal Availability:

Early November Pick-Up, Nov 5

This pick up will feel like a continuation of the summer CSA share, with the bulk of the crops being picked fresh from our fields, along with a generous helping of root vegetables.  Note that greenhouse greens will not yet be ready for harvest.

Pre-Thanksgiving Pick-Up, Nov 19 or 22

Thanksgiving feast time!  This is the time of year when there is still a bounty left from the fall, but you better eat it fast because not everything will keep through the winter.  This distribution is likely to feature the best variety of the crops listed above.

December Holiday Pick-Up, Dec 17

Getting into the coldest months, the storage greens and field crops tend to drop off, and we are left with a variety of roots and winter squash to choose from, not to mention a small quantity of specialty greens from the greenhouse.

January Pick-up, Jan 14

At this time of year it’s amazing to see these root crops vibrant with color and sweet in the depth of winter.  This is another share that will be heavy in roots, with potentially some delicious specialty greens from the greenhouse.

Feb Pick-up, Feb 11

Last one!  Those really hardy crops that survive the whole winter will be here.  Expect more roots, and potentially more greenhouse greens with the return of the sunlight in Feb.
