SUMMARY:2020 Annual Meeting of the Friends of Holcomb Farm
DESCRIPTION:All members of the Friends of Holcomb Farm are invited to our Annual Meeting\, which will be held at “the Seat\,” located at the top at the Holcomb Tree Trail at Holcomb Farm. To comply with State social distancing guidelines\, we will meet outdoors this year — and\, sadly\, without our pie baking contest. Guided tours of the Tree Trail will take place before the meeting.\nPlease park at the main Holcomb Farm complex and walk across the intersection of Simsbury Road and Day Street South to the Holcomb Tree Trail\, accessed via the gravel farm road. Please see the attached trail map for routes to the Seat or look for trail signs to the event. If you are interested\, Tree Trail tours will depart from the Seat between 3:30 and 4:00pm and the meeting will begin at 4:30pm. \nSeating and bottled water will be provided. Please wear your mask when you arrive at the Seat. Please let us know if you cannot reach the Seat on foot\, so we can make alternate transportation arrangements. In the event of inclement weather\, we will meet under the roof at the North Barn at the main farm complex.

SUMMARY:EVENT POSTPONED New England’s Best Opportunities to Adapt to a Changing Climate\, presented by Bill Moomaw\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:WE’RE SORRY\, BUT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO A LATER DATE.\nWe thank you for understanding. \nCome hear a lead author of the Nobel Peace Prize winning\, 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) discuss the ways in which we\, in New England\, can help mitigate climate change. All are welcome to join us for this free and important educational event. \nSpecial guest speaker William Moomaw\, Ph.D.\, Emeritus Professor of international environmental policy and founding director of the Center for International Environment and Resource Policy at The Fletcher School\, Tufts University\, will speak at the Holcomb Farm North Barn\, 113 Simsbury Road\, West Granby\, on Thursday\, March 12\, 2020\, at 7:00PM. Doors open at 6:30PM. \nNew England is fortunate that it has both dense concentrations of population and economic activity and some of the most productive forests and wetlands in North America. Reducing our heat trapping emissions is easier to achieve in high density regions because of more efficient buildings\, living arrangements and transportation options. In addition to these advantages\, New England is adjacent to the largest zero-emission off-shore wind electricity resource in North America. \nLess appreciated is the fact that much of New England is covered by forests that are of an age that will remove and store vast amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide over the rest of this century and beyond. Our coastal wetlands are also among the most effective at storing carbon of any ecosystem. If we can keep from degrading our freshwater wetlands\, they can continue to store large amounts of carbon\, as well. \nAccording to Dr. Moomaw\, a combination of technology\, nature and smart designing and planning for our future can both reduce future adverse changes and enhance our adaptation as the climate continues to shift. \nThe Granby Land Trust and the Friends of Holcomb Farm are pleased to co-sponsor this discussion on mitigating climate change. \nDr. Moomaw currently serves as co-director of the Global Development and Environment Institute at Tufts\, which he co-founded. He received his B.A. degree in chemistry from Williams College and Ph.D. in physical chemistry from MIT. He had a 26-year career in chemistry and environmental studies at Williams College\, where he directed the Center for Environmental Studies. He served as AAAS Science Fellow in the U.S. Senate\, where he worked on legislation that successfully addressed ozone depletion\, and on legislation responding to the 1973 energy crisis. He began working on climate change in 1988 as the first director of the climate program at World Resources Institute in Washington. He has been a lead author of five Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Reports. The IPCC shared\, with Al Gore\, the Nobel Peace Prize for its climate work in 2007. \nRegister in advance via email to Trish at: percivalt@cox.net or call 860-653-7095 and leave a message

SUMMARY:Harvest Dinner & Silent Auction
DESCRIPTION:Back again and bigger and better than ever\, the Friends of Holcomb Farm will host our annual Harvest Dinner & Silent Auction on Saturday\, November 9\, at the NEW Metro Bis Restaurant location at the Ensign House in Simsbury. This authentic farm-to-table meal\, expertly prepared by Chef Chris Prosperi using all the great bounty from Holcomb Farm\, is the single most important fundraiser for our Fresh Access program. \nFresh Access annually provides over 8\,000 pounds of fresh produce to individuals and organizations that might not otherwise have access to local\, chemical-free food. Locally\, this includes Granby’s weekly Waste-Not-Want-Not dinners\, the Senior Center\, and individual families\, through Granby Social Services. Other institutions in the greater Farmington Valley and Hartford area\, including the Wheeler Clinic and the Healing Meals Community Project\, also are served. \nThe Silent Auction offers myriad opportunities to bid on great stuff from local contributors. Last year’s bidding opportunities included original Laura Eden art\, weekends in vacation homes\, a professionally guided fishing trip\, gift certificates to local restaurants\, yoga and massage sessions\, and much\, much more. We hope you’ll join us! \nTo order tickets\, click here or call us at 860-844-8616.

SUMMARY:Holcomb Tree Trail Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:As part of the annual Connecticut Trails Day\, the Friends of the Holcomb Farm offers a family friendly hike in the fields and woods of the Town-owned farm.  The hike will cover 4-5 miles at a leisurely pace.  Well behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.  The hike will start at the parking lot at the main campus (113 Simsbury Rd.\, West Granby). \nThis year’s event will feature a scavenger hunt to identify several varieties of trees throughout the eastern section of the farm in rolling fields and forest.  Recently\, several new trees have been planted and mature trees in the existed woodlands have been tagged with labels.  The intent is to create teams of all ages tasked with finding as many trees as possible from a provided list and map.  Teams will take pictures of as many labels as they find.  Prizes will be awarded to the winning team.
