Experience Holcomb Farm

Holcomb Farm

Holcomb Farm is a 317-acre historic working farm located in the heart of West Granby, Connecticut. It is comprised of:

  • A nonprofit, mixed-vegetable production farm that produces abundant, delicious produce without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We grow on 26 acres of Town-owned property for a 450 member Summer CSA, 100 member Winter CSA, wholesale customers, our farm store, and our food donation program, called Fresh Access.  We use only chemical- and GMO-free methods and sign the Northeast Organic Farming Assocation of Connecticut’s Farmer’s Pledge.
  • 10+ miles of trails that are open to the public, from dawn to dusk. Our trails connect to McLean Game Refuge and Granby Land Trust trails, and wind their way through the beautiful, varied terrain of rural West Granby, in the foothills of the Berkshires. Learn more.
  • The Holcomb Tree Trail, where nearly 100 trees are labeled with their common and botanical names; and interpretive signs teach readers more about the trees and the landscape. Learn more.
  • A beautiful banquet facility for life's special events. All private bookings are handled through the Town of Granby's Parks and Recreation Department.
  • A community gathering place in a historic New England setting.
  • A nonprofit organization that does good work in Hartford County. Through Fresh Access, we donated more than 15 tons of fresh produce to people in need in 2022. In addition, through the Friends of Holcomb Farm and our CSA, we host periodic events that celebrate healthy living, almost always free-of-charge, and open to all.

The farm is operated collaboratively by the Town of Granby and a Board of Directors composed of local citizens.  277 acres of the farm are protected from development through a conservation restriction held by the Granby Land Trust.

The mission of the Friends of Holcomb Farm is to preserve, promote and utilize an historic, working New England farm for the benefit of the community.

💚Happy Earth Day!💙 Today is the day to acknowledge everything that the Earth provides for us: healthy food, clean air, fresh water, beauty, connection, and so much more. As a celebratory thank you to our planet CSA and PYO members can come to the farm to get free veg and harvest-your-own-spinach! (check your email) There are also FREE carrots and sweet potatoes at @juliensbakery all day today! Also free carrots and sweet potatoes for seniors today at the Granby Senior Center!

It’s cliche but we mean it when we say that everyday is Earth day on the farm. The health of our farm-ecosystem, the produce, and the people the farm feeds is at the center of our decisions. This means we are chemical-free (even organic ones), holistic, and practice sustainable farming practices like cover cropping, adding biochar, rotating crops, mulching, using only organic or non-GMO seeds, reducing tillage, planting beneficial species for pollinators, implementing sustainable water management, composting, and planting a wide diversity of crops.

A few ways to celebrate Earth Day everyday this summer is to shop small and support your local holistic farmer and plant a garden. We will have three weekends of plant sales in May starting Mother’s Day weekend with every seedling you need grown from organic or non-gmo seedlings. We officially open June 10th for the summer! Whether you choose us or another farm we thank you for supporting sustainable growers!
💚💙

@juliensfarmstore took Purple Majesty to the next level 🤯This variety has quickly become one of Joe’s favorites to grow. We started growing it last year and it has not disappointed in the flavor, storage, nutrition, and of course the color department. Ideal life-cycle of a purple majesty sweet potato: delivered as a baby sweet potato slip in late April, planted in early June, harvested in October, cured/stored/sweetened in the winter, and transformed into a purple sweet potato basque cheesecake
Wait did we just say sweet potato slips delivered in late April? Time to order more!

Spring is arguably the best time of year on the farm 🌱the chore list is growing but isn’t overwhelming and the promise of warmer days is here. The farm crew has been keeping up with the weekly seeding schedule and keeping busy with a wide variety of more random chores. We uncovered PYO strawberries, planted fava beans, prepped greenhouse beds, and our smallest greenhouse had a huge makeover - we transplanted the fig trees out and dug out the walkways to make raised beds. Final touch will be filling the dug walkways with aged woodchips to feed the soil, smother weeds, and add to the fungal bank. Labor intensive work but worth it for the health and success of our greenhouse crops.
